Night At The Crossroads

Maigret has barely had time to wonder what the hell is going on between these two when he discovers that the local garage at the crossroads, run by a creep named JoJo, is a front for a fencing operation. This discovery is followed by an attempt on his life and an almost fatal wounding of Carl Anderson.

To say more about the plot would be to ruin the pleasure of watching Maigret hack through the lies and secrets that drift over the crossroads like a fog. Simenon, as was his way, moves with swift efficiency as to pile up the complications and roll out the revelation. The book, written in his lean and unsentimental prose, ends on a perfect note of existential grittiness.

The murder Maigret was investigating in Maigret's Night at the Crossroads (ITV) was of a Jewish jewel fence called Goldberg who, we later discovered, was recklessly eager to pull off one last high-yield deal before heading west with his wife. But he was shot at the titular location out in the countryside near Paris, and his body is discovered in a garage of a lugubrious Danish introvert with a facial scarring and an eyepatch. Whodunnit This being a crossroads, there was a quartet of potential culprits.

Else, when we meet her, is a vampish Danish immigrant living in near-captivity with Carl, her possessive, aristocratic brother. Carl is suspected in a murder after a corpse is found on his garage, and so Maigret visits the secluded, ill-lit house Else and Carl share. The house is at the crossroads of a highways, and neighbors include an ex-boxer who runs a garage and an appallingly bourgeois insurance salesman. The youngster Willis displayed an impressive range of talents including fingerpicking mastery, good humored stage presence, a powerful introspective vocal range and stagecraft far beyond what his young age would suggest.Knox, another relatively young performer, and his band, after backing Willis at the end of his set, sailed through some original soul/blues numbers, followed by veteran Peterson who displayed his mastery of both B-3 organ and guitar as well as crowd pleasing showmanship. 78 year old Alabama Slim played a set of deep, dark blues followed by soul/pop/blues singer Robert Finley who closed the show.This video takes you in to Blue Heaven for a morning rehearsal followed by concert footage shot from the first row. The sound is surprisingly good considering it's recorded directly from a camcorder mounted shotgun microphone. Attended the Saturday night show at the Stieffel Theater with friends from Colorado. Doug MacLeod was spellbinding, Bobby Rush was fun and the rest of the performers were awesome... I cannot wait until nexts years show...a big Thank you to Chad Kassem for putting this great event on...

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise: film noir begins here, with Renoir's conjuring of crime, mystery, sex and nighttime fog. An intrepid, hard-nosed policeman (Simenon's Maigret, on the screen for the first time) investigates a smuggling ring after the dead body of their collaborator turns up. He finds a far more live body in Else, an opium-besotted beauty whose out-of-focus eyes are suddenly turned in his direction. Is there a reel missing from this film Maybe. Does it matter Not one bit.
